The photography exhibition of an English photojournalist James Hills opens in Perm

The Pushkin Central City Library houses the photography exhibition of an British leading photojournalist James Hill. The exhibition opened on June 25 and is called “The Angel of Music”.

James Hill’s work has won many of photojournalism’s most prestigious prizes including the Pulitzer Prize, the Visa d’Or at Perpignan’s Visa pour l’Image, World Press Photo, and awards from the Overseas Press Club of America and the National Press Photographer’s Association of America.

Hill came to Perm in 2013 and immediately found himself at the centre of cultural events. He chose one of Perm’s most significant places to be the object of his photo stories.

Hill saying that he thinks it is the well-known things that are most difficult to take photos of. Opera and ballet are known not only to me but to many Perm citizens as well. For them, the Opera and Ballet Theatre is the starting point in the cultural life of the city. Ballerina’s gestures and positions are imprinted in Russian people’s mentality, and the main challenge for him was to find a new interpretation of something which is well known. This is why he decided to take photos backstage to highlight the moments which are usually hidden from spectators. He was allowed to walk freely from the rehearsal room to the wardrobe department, and from the wardrobe department right to the stage. This freedom is the best present for any photographer looking for a great photo.

“The Angel of Music” is a joint exhibition project involving the Perm Art Gallery and the Pushkin Library. The exhibition is open till the end of summer.
